We are putting the garden to bed, Folks, which means, essentially–pulling up every single thing. Gracelessly, I might add.
Today we focused mainly on squash, ripping up whole masses of tangled and interwoven plants and heaping them on the lawn, before carting them by the (numerous) wheelbarrow-full to our compost heap.
We also pulled up the sunflowers. Fun fact: though pretty and useful, both sunflowers and squash plants are scratchy as all get-out. My legs look like I lost a fight to a cat.
It’s kind of bittersweet to be putting the garden to bed, but it’s definitely time. We’ve had a good season, learned a lot, and are ready to take a break and plan for an even better run next year.
